| Christ: The Cornerstone |
Names in the Bible are given to describe the character of people or beings who bear them. The Bible says, "Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you." (Ps. 9:10)
When Moses said, "Show me thy way that I may know thee," God put Him in a cleft of a rock and proclaimed to him the name of the Lord-Jehovah. Ex 34: 6,7 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and Faithfulness. Maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
The LORD is called
Jehovah because He is from everlasting to everlasting - infinite, unchangeable, faithful.
Elohim because he is the triune God, who is alone to be worshiped and adored
El-Shaddai because he is the almighty and omnipotent one.
Jehovah Jireh because he has provided himself a ransom for the sin of the whole world.
Jehovah Shalom because he is peace giver.
Messiah because he is the anointed of God to preach good tidings unto the meek and He is the sent one in Isa. 61:1,2 "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion -- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair."
Shiloh because He is prince of peace where it is tranquil and secure.
Immanuel because He is God with us manifest in human flesh.
Here are three titles for Jesus Christ that are less known, nevertheless remarkable. In Zech 10: 4-6 we have a constellation of three priceless titles of Christ. "From Judah will come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler. Together they will be like mighty men trampling the muddy streets in battle. Because the LORD is with them, they will fight and overthrow the horsemen. I will strengthen the house of Judah and save the house of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them. They will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the LORD their God and I will answer them."
