Summary

1 Corinthians 12:27-31a

Ø      The gifts are “given” (appointed) by God.

Ø      They are for the "common good" of the body.

Ø      We are all a part of the body.

Ø      Some gifts are greater than others, but all are essential.

Ø      The “lesser gifts” are treated with special honor.

The KJV renders verse 27 as "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular."  "Members in particular" is a good translation.  Yes, we are a part of the body of Christ, and we are in Him.  But we are "members in particular".  Bearing the marks that God has placed upon us as individuals by His own will, we are all one in the Body of Christ.  God has appointed us and has the Master Plan.  His plan is that we are all to be different and all one at the same time.

 Are We All the Same?

Paul's questions are rhetorical and imply a "no" answer.

Are all apostles?  No!

Are all prophets?  No!

Are all teachers? No!

Do all work miracles? No!

Do all have gifts of healing? No!

Do all speak in tongues? No!

Do all interpret? No!

But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

Now the stage is set for the Apostle Paul's eloquent discourse in Chapter 13.
