Beyond the Basics

"
With this in mind, we should stop going over the elementary truths about Christ and move on to topics for more mature people. We shouldn’t repeat the basics about turning away from the useless things we did and the basics about faith in God. We shouldn’t repeat the basic teachings about such things as baptisms, setting people apart for holy tasks, dead people coming back to life, and eternal judgment." (Hebrews 6:1-2)(GW - God’s Word version)

These verses tell us that we need to get beyond the basics.  Then 6 things are listed that are considered basics.

Repentance

bullet

Faith in God

Baptisms

Setting apart for holy tasks (sanctification)

Resurrection

bullet

Eternal judgment

God says that we need to get beyond these basics of the Christian faith, and move toward maturity.  The sad truth is that many Christians are not well acquainted the basics.  Can you defend who Jesus is? What did Jesus do when He dies on that cross? Can you explain what Jesus did on the cross, and what the resurrection means to all?

To grow to maturity, we need to build on the foundation of basics.  "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain."  To get beyond the basics, we need to have a firm grasp of the basics.  This section of The Psalmsinger Pages contains teaching on some basics.  As is true with all things that pertain to God, it is not hard to understand in our minds what these truths mean.  But the real depth comes in what it means to each and everyone of us in our own lives and hearts.  Even though it's basic, it's deep stuff.  These are things that all Christians who are two years in the faith or more should understand.  For some, this will be review, but for all of us, this is the beginning of God's revelation to us, His creation.

The word “doctrines” has gotten a bad rap over the years. Doctrine is not shoving Bible verses down people’s throats.  Literally the word means "instruction, teaching and learning."  We need biblical doctrine because there is so much false instruction, teaching and learning in the world.  We need to know the truth.  Then we will be able to discern the false when we hear it, and the truth that we know will make us free.

So here we go.

Our focus will be on three “G’s”

bulletGospel – God’s power outside of us
bulletGrace – God’s power flowing into us
bulletGreat Commission - God’s power living out of us
